A Mild Valley, |Until It Isn't|
People think of this valley as mild, and mostly it is. Then a spring storm comes through and roofs across Ada and Canyon County lose shingles in an afternoon.
On May 28, 2026, a gust of 72 mph was recorded in the valley, among the strongest ever measured here in a May storm, with sustained winds around 45. A month later the National Weather Service warned of 60 mph gusts and hail across central Ada County, with damage to roofs and siding expected. Neither storm was unusual enough to make national news. Both were enough to end the life of a roof that was already tired.
Idaho’s code sets a 90 mph design wind speed for this area. That’s the same as the 115 mph ultimate speed in the code tables. A roof built to that standard handles ordinary weather. What it doesn’t handle is age plus a gust at the edge of the envelope.
Peak Roofing is owner-operated and works throughout both counties. Peak Roofing was already a trusted name in the valley when Mike took it over. He brought more than 10 years of hands-on experience with him. Read our story
Wind Damage: What |Valley Gusts Do to a Roof|
Shingles blown off
Wind gets under the edges first. Rakes, eaves, and ridge lose shingles before the middle of the roof does, which is why the damage is often on one slope and invisible from the street.
Creased shingles
This is the one homeowners miss. A gust lifts a shingle, folds it back, and drops it down looking normal. But the crease has already broken the mat inside it. The sealant strip underneath won't stick again. That shingle is finished, it just hasn't left yet.
Lifted seals
Same idea without the crease. Once the seal is broken, the next storm takes the shingle. From the ground it all looks fine.
Damage around penetrations
Wind works at flashing, pipe boots, and vents. A leak that appears weeks after a storm usually starts there.
Hail Damage: What It Looks Like and Why You Miss It
Hail damage on an asphalt roof rarely looks dramatic. What it does is knock granules loose and bruise the mat underneath, which shortens the roof’s life by years without producing a leak you’d notice this season.
- Bruising
A hail strike leaves a soft dent with granules missing. Press it and it gives, like a bruise on fruit. That’s mat damage, and it doesn’t heal.
- Granules in the gutters
After a hail storm, granule accumulation tells you the roof took hits even if the shingles look intact from a distance.
- Check the soft metal first
This is what an inspector looks at before climbing. Vent caps, and the fins on your AC condenser dent more easily than shingles do. If those are pocked, the roof took the same hail, and it gives you a check on which direction the storm came from.
- Which slopes took it
Hail comes in at an angle, so damage concentrates on the slopes facing the storm. A roof can be finished on one side and near untouched on the other.
What to Do |After a Storm|
- Look, but stay on the ground
Walk the perimeter. Check the eaves for granules, look for shingles in the yard, and photograph anything you find. A wet or damaged roof is not a safe place to be.
- Note the date
Insurers work from a date of loss. Write down when the storm hits before the details blur together.
- Get it inspected
We’ll walk the roof, photograph what we find, and give you a written condition report. If there’s no real damage, that’s what the report will say.
- Emergency storm repair
If water is coming in Call (208) 724-9315 rather than filling out a form. Active water does more damage the longer it runs, and we schedule those calls ahead of routine work. Our hours are Monday through Saturday, 7 to 6.
Roof Insurance Claims: |How We Help|
Here’s the honest version of what a roofer can and can’t do for your claim.
- What we do
We inspect the roof and document what we find with photographs and a written report. We can be there when your adjuster comes out, so the damage gets looked at the same way twice. We give you a clear scope and estimate for the work itself.
- What we won't do
We won’t tell you your claim will be approved, because that isn’t our call. We won’t guess at your payout. We won’t push you to file when the damage doesn’t support it, and we won’t file on your behalf.
Whether a claim makes sense depends on the extent of the damage and on your deductible. Sometimes the answer is that the repair costs less than the deductible and filing isn’t worth it. We’ll say so.
Most policies require prompt notice after a loss, and the window varies by carrier, so it’s worth checking yours rather than waiting. If the damage turns out to be age and wear rather than the storm, insurance generally won’t cover it, and roof replacement becomes the conversation instead.
Class 4 Impact-Resistant |Shingles|
If you’re replacing a storm-damaged roof, this is worth asking about before you pick a shingle.
Class 4 is the highest impact rating available. The shingle is built to take a hail strike without the mat bruising, which is the damage that quietly shortens a roof’s life. Owens Corning’s Duration FLEX line is the Class 4 option we install.
With some insurers, a Class 4 roof may qualify your home for a premium discount. That varies by carrier and by policy, so call your agent and ask before you assume it. It won’t apply everywhere, but on a roof you’re replacing anyway, it can change the math.

Warranties and the Peak Promise
Your work is warranty-backed, and your shingles carry the manufacturer’s warranty. We’ll explain the exact warranty that applies to your roofing system before the project starts.
- The Peak Promise
We aim to get your roof right the first time. Once in a while a job hits a bump. What matters is that your roofer stands behind the work. If something needs attention after we’re done, you call us and we take care of it. That’s the promise we stand behind on every job.
One more thing worth saying out loud. We are based here and licensed here under Idaho registration #4071991, and we will be here next spring if your roof needs us. Read our reviews
Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?
Often, when the damage comes from a covered event like wind or hail rather than age or wear. Every policy is different and we won’t promise an outcome. What we can do is inspect, document what we find, and help you through the process.
How do I know if my roof has storm damage?
Most valley homes are a one-day tear-off and install. Larger, steeper, or more cut-up roofs run into a second day. Weather can move the schedule, and we’ll tell you what to expect before we start.
How long do I have to file a claim?
Most policies require prompt notice after a loss, and the window varies by carrier. Check your policy rather than assuming, and don’t let an inspection wait on the paperwork.
Will filing a claim raise my rates?
That depends on your carrier, your history, and whether the event was widespread. It’s a fair question to put to your agent before you file, since that sits with your carrier rather than with us.
